Aileen Flynn is the keyboard player and a singer in Sisters Erie. The oldest of the four Flynn sisters, she is from Abbeyleix, County Laois, Ireland, and was twenty-five during the band's 2013 U.S. tour. Her calm delivery, understated humor, and deliberate stage presence give her a different manner from her more immediately exuberant younger sisters.1

Aileen is difficult to embarrass. A harmless quirk can become material for extensive family teasing without becoming an actual wound; she is more likely to answer with a flat look or one well-timed line than to explain why everyone should stop. The composure leaves room for mischief of her own.1

A musical family

Aileen was born on 1 February 1988 at St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, and grew up in Abbeyleix, County Laois.7

Aileen grew up making music with Mary, Gael, and Ryanne in a family where both parents and the wider family were musical. Singing and playing together preceded the band's public career. Their sibling harmony rests on that shared experience and the habits of listening to one another that came with it.2

The sisters were performing at school events, community gatherings, and local functions by 2008–2009. They regarded 2010 as the year the act became a working band, and their January 2011 Danny Kyle Open Stage appearance in Glasgow became an important early milestone. Their first EP, The Coming Storm, followed in spring 2012.3

The band gives all four sisters room to lead. Aileen's position as the eldest does not make her the permanent frontwoman or assign her authority over every musical decision.1 2

Keyboards and voice

Aileen's keyboards are part of the band's combination of voices, fiddle, acoustic instruments, and traditional percussion. Her singing is clear, focused, and controlled, with a poise particularly suited to slower material and songs whose force depends on restraint.2 4

She takes the lead on Step It Out Mary, the opening track of The Coming Storm. The sisters had known the song for years, and sharing a family with a Mary had made it an obvious source of teasing. Their arrangement gradually lets the troubling story beneath the buoyant chorus emerge. Aileen's measured delivery gives that change somewhere to go.5

Her ability to hold a musical center is part of a wider ensemble. Ryanne and Gael take many of the band's leads, while Aileen and Mary bring their own vocal character to leads and harmonies. All four can carry a song.2 4

Personal life

Composure and chosen excitement

Aileen chooses when to release her energy. The same person who can let a conversation run around her also rides a motorcycle for the pleasure of the adrenaline and the opportunity to work off frustration. That appetite for excitement fits comfortably beside her self-control.1

Her humor is similarly economical. She can let her sisters develop a joke, then answer with a single line. Her composure accommodates both mischief and a firm sense of what she enjoys.1

Her musical tastes include a sincere affection for pop. She sees no contradiction between accomplished traditional musicianship and enjoying something another person might dismiss as commercial or uncool. Her sisters are welcome to find that amusing.1

Among the sisters

Aileen is protective of Mary, Gael, and Ryanne while trusting them to handle themselves. She does not hover over ordinary decisions or try to remove every consequence of a poor one. Her loyalty becomes more focused when someone deliberately treats a sister cruelly.1

Gael can direct a great deal of teasing at her because Aileen can absorb it and return it. Ryanne brings a more immediate, conversational energy; Mary often has her attention fixed on something particular. Her composure gives the family's conversations a different rhythm.1 6
